What To Wear For Your Next Lifestyle Family Photography Session by Sweetest Moments Photography
"Hey Hannah! Do you have any outfit recommendations for our session?"
This is the #1 question that I get asked after a family books with me. I completely understand that being in charge of finding the perfect outfits for each person for family photos can be a very stressful endeavor. Staying away from poor styling choices will make you love your images even more and enhance the beautiful connections being made between your family instead of being distracted by what your wearing.
Believe it or not, matching outfits are a thing of the past; no more families dressed in all white shirts and blue jeans! I am here to help guide you into finding a color palette that will flatter both your family AND your location! Start by asking yourself if you have a favorite color that you like to wear? Do you have a specific location that you want your session to be held at? All of these things are key factors in deciding what color scheme is right for you! If that seems like too much of a task then take a minute to look around your home! If your house is on the light & airy side, opt for softer colors with non-busy prints! Do you love bright & vibrant? Go for contrast! It seems that families' color preferences show up in your home in both decor and in wardrobes so take a look around to see what direction you should go!
As you see below, I have grouped colors that photograph well together along with what colors look best at certain locations!
Another way to add dimension into your images is to coordinate your wardrobe with both solids, patterns, and various textures. Coordinating outfits doesn't mean matching outfits! Start by picking two to three colors that you like that are flattering for the family and go from there. A few family members can keep it simple with solid colors while a few others can incorporate some patterns! Being able to coordinate outfits and colors together is a great way to keep your family looking nice and unified without the "matching" look. Coordination in your outfits will photograph best and give your images an added pop you didn't know they needed!
Textures such as a nubby sweater, tweedy scarf, fur vest, tulle skirt, metallic shoes, denim jackets, lace top, corduroy pants, velvet dress, the options are limitless! Patterns such as stripes, plaid, and checkered are powerful patterns that photograph best when used in small doses; floral and paisley are great if they aim as your main pattern!
